It’s a wild, wild wasteland out there, that’s for sure. No place safe these days… not since the Atom War a century or so ago. At least, that’s what they say it was. God knows, really, what it actually was…
Either way, you’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere safe out there to stay, and harder pressed to find an entire route that’s safe. Now see here, I’ll help you out just fine, won’t be too much for an old man like myself, but it’ll cost you.
Or at least it did, back in the day. Nowadays I don’t worry about it too much, town helps me with most things provided I help them with the things they need, which just happens to be navigational services, which is why I assume you’ve come to me. Your destination… Pine City, right? You’re lucky, twenty-five years ago you couldn’t get to Pine City without taking the Deep Sand Junction way down south, there were too many rad horrors up north here, kinda place where people went to and never came back. Can’t say I knew anyone who traversed that stretch during that time and made it out alive, and I knew a lot of people.
Anyway, here’s your plan. It shouldn’t take you more than a few days overall, so you’ll want to pack accordingly. It gets mighty cold up there at night, so you’ll want to keep that in mind as well. Anyway, you’ll start out from here, in Trident, and head north on the old Highway 46. Signs are still out there in some places, and if you can’t find them, just ask any local to point it out. You’ll take that for, oh, I’d say about 30 miles or so, before you’ll come to a big interchange.
Now, here’s where you really got to start being careful. Not that you didn’t have to be before, but especially here. You’ll pass within about 50 miles of where the old research labs were, place where the rad horrors crawled out of. Most of them have been killed, these days, but some still lurk far out in the wastes. Stick to the roads and you’ll be fine.
Or you should be, at least. Pack plenty of ammo.
Anyway, take a right at the interchange. This is Interstate 7, and you’ll follow it for another 30 miles or so. Watch out for the cannibals out through here. You’ll hit a town, Maynard, and want to head north from there. Don’t stick around too long in Maynard, by the way, locals there are just a little weird in all the wrong ways. From Maynard, head north on the old toll road another 15 miles, and you’ll hit the ruins of Carlton. Pass through them fast and don’t look in any of the buildings, you won’t like what you see there.
After Carlton comes the last stretch, and probably the most dangerous. Pine City lies in an old forest, not sure what possessed anyone to want to live there in the first place, but I don’t know what drives the people in Maynard to pursue their little gig either. Doesn’t matter. The forest road off to the east of Carlton, can’t miss it, is only 10 miles or so long, but you have to pass through during broad daylight. Pine City has defenses, ample ones, for a reason, and getting caught outside at dark out there is a fate worse than death if you ask me.
After the forest road, you’ll hit Pine City. Tell them Julius sent you, or they probably won’t let you in. Don’t forget this.
Is that all? Alright then, there’s your route. Come back tomorrow and I’ll have it mapped out for you. Good luck out there, you will need it.
Great story!
